Being Safe Starts with Having a Safe Home
People with disability face a significantly higher risk of violence, abuse, and exploitation than people without disability – with more than double the rate of sexual assault and up to 55% having been physically or sexually abused since the age of 15. A safe, secure, and accessible home is one of the most powerful protections against harm.
Yet many people with disability are forced to live in unsuitable housing—from old and inaccessible group homes to aged care facilities and hospital wards—simply because there is nowhere else for them to go. Others are at risk of homelessness or living in unsafe conditions due to the severe shortage of affordable, accessible housing.
As a country, we need to do more to protect the most vulnerable.
The Challenge
The lack of appropriate housing and adequate support funding is an urgent National crisis.
Advocacy organisations and research consistently show that people with disability are being pushed into precarious living situations because most housing stock is inaccessible. At the same time, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has clear limits on what it will fund.
Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is available to only a small proportion (less than 4%) of NDIS participants, and many essential items—such as utilities, modified furniture, appliances, and safety-related supports—are considered “everyday living costs” and sit outside the scheme.
When housing is unsafe and essential needs go unfunded, people with disability are left exposed to risk.
Our Mission & Response
Ability Homes Properties was established to bridge these gaps. We are a registered charity dedicated to improving safety, accessibility, and choice and control in housing for people with disability.
Our approach is twofold:
- We provide safe, functional, accessible homes in the community so no one is forced to live in an institutional or unsafe environment due to disability.
- We fund essential items and supports when no other funding is available, or where a person’s circumstances or plan leave critical needs unmet.
By doing these things, we help people with disability live with greater independence, choice, control and security.
